'For hundreds of years, she has been a temptress, a serpent following the tattoo, the pulsation, the rhythm. She is the white light Goddess, caught on the edge of psychosis, drum beats resonating from the balls of her feet. She is the basis of all that invokes us to dance, summoning the music which flows from the bones of our ancestors.'

In this 'Nomadic Tapestry Style' class, we delve deep into the roots of the dance, back to the days when silk clad women danced through clouds of incense, and drummed on lush carpets in the souks of the Middle East. This class is tailored to an intermediate skillset, but those with stronger skills can be assured of additional layers and many other opportunities to "level up". We will work with the main footwork families as set down by Jamila Salimpour, and the hipwork of the Egyptian dancers of the Golden Era.

Session Focus – Tray
Training Focus – Balance, level changes, Moroccan rhythms.

This session we will be dancing with large trays loaded with battery operated candles. At times we will be holding the tray, at others, the tray and contents will be balanced on our heads. For those who are flexible enough, doing floorwork with the tray will be an option. The rhythm we will use is from Morocco, and as this type of rhythm is not usually heard in Western music, it may add a whole new dimension the student may not have come across before.

This prop came to dance performances through the coffee shops of Arabic North Africa. Holding the tray high above the head was a safe way to get the many full tea and coffee cups safely across the crowded coffee shops and dancing while carrying the tray on his head was a good way for the waiter to get more tips. This is one of the props that female dancers ‘borrowed’ from a standard daily male activity and made their own.
