INTERMEDIATE RAKS SAIDI WITH ELVIRA TUESDAYS 6:00PM-7:30PM
Starts: Tuesday, September 19, 2017
Duration: 10 weeks
This term we will be learning a Raks Saidi choreography, a folkloric dance (one of the baladi dances) from a rural area of Upper Egypt (Southern) called Sa'id. This dance is also known as Raks Al Assaya and frequently incorporates a stick or cane called an Assaya (Arabic for stick). It includes energetic bouncy footwork and horse-styled steps, hip work, shoulder shimmies and other Baladi style movements.
The woman's Assaya dance is partly a parody and partly an homage to the men's dance "Tahtib", often flirtatious, mimicking the posturing of the men and having some fun with it.
This is an Intermediate level class, and students are expected to have taken several beginner classes. A knowledge of the choreography and a costume will be required to perform at the Bedouin Beats Recital at the end of term. Costumes will be discussed in class. Looking forward to dancing with you.
No Classes October 31st. 2017.
